Superfaster Mazda MX-5 GT Concept 2012

At this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed (28 June – 1 July) Mazda will be showing off a tuned version of the MX-5 sportscar called MX-5 GT Concept. The car was inspired by the company’s podium winning MX-5 GT race car, and during its debut at Goodwood customer reaction to this higher performance version of the MX-5 will be gathered.

The Mazda MX-5 GT Concept was built by race specialists Jota Sport, and it produces 205 horsepower from its naturally aspirated 2.0-litre 4-cylinder engine. That’s a healthy increase over the standard car’s 167 hp. The MX-5 GT Concept uses the same manual gearbox as the standard car. However the suspension system has been exchanged for a more sporting and adjustable setup.

The Mazda MX-5 GT Concept is marked out from the standard MX-5 with the addition of a subtle aerokit – made less subtle due to the contrasting paintwork. Up front is a carbon fiber splitter, while at the rear a new diffuser makes an appearance as does a small spoiler.

Complimenting, as well as contributing to, the more powerful engine output is a new sports exhaust with central mounted dual tailpipes.

On the inside the car is fitted with Recaro seats which provide increased support for the driver and passenger, and a number of carbon fiber trim elements help to make it a little bit ‘special’ inside.

Mazda say that customers who want to use the car more for track use would be able to order it with road slicks and body-coloured roll hoops behind the seats.

Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director, Mazda UK said of the concept: “The MX-5 has been our best known car for 22 years and with the GT4 and GT Concept on show, we are demonstrating that this car can compete with the more expensive race and performance cars but still remain true to its roots of affordable motoring with a strong focus on the driving experience.”

If customer reaction is positive the Mazda MX-5 GT could go into production in the near future.

New Design Avanti is India’s First Sports Car, Production Enter in 2013

The Italian automotive industry is renowned not only for supercar-making companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini, but also for its carrozzerias like Pininfarina and Bertone, which design and engineer cars for other automakers as well as manufacture their own limited production models.

The Indian automotive industry, on the other hand, is best known as the country that manufactures the world’s cheapest car, the Tata Nano, which may or may not lose the title to the Bajaj RE60.

own sport car thanks to DC Design’s Avanti that was launched at the 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo.

Founded by former GM designer Dilip Chhabria, DC Design is mostly known for its one-off prototypes. The Avanti, however, is a production ready sports car that will be manufactured at the company’s brand new plant at Talagon near its existing Prune facilities.

“Every country which has written its name in the pantheon of automobile manufacturing has invariably distinguished itself with sports cars by its own nationals and I thought that India rightly needs to be in this exclusive club”, said Chhabria. “The design is completely our very own as is the engineering and also the production process. Type approval and on-road tests would follow soon”.

Chhabria added that DC Design plans to manufacture 300 units of the Avanti in 2013-2014 and, if all goes well, increase annual production to four figures.

As its creator admits, India’s first supercar “doesn’t reinvent the wheel” as far as its conception and manufacturing process is concerned.

Like all small-volume manufacturers, DC Design will use parts from various carmakers, especially in the powertrain and suspension depaetments.

The prototype that was unveiled at the 2012 Auto Expo is constructed around a lightweight but rigid spaceframe chassis. It features unequal-length wishbones and coil over shock absorbers on both axles, 19-inch wheels with 255/35 front and 295/30 rear tires and 330 mm ventilated disc brakes with AP Racing calipers.

It is powered by a mid-mounted 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder EcoBoost engine sourced from Ford and tuned to deliver 240HP and 366Nm (270 lb-ft) of torque. Thanks to its compliance with Euro 5 emissions regulations it can also be exported, while a slight change in the engine mapping will make it compatible with the oncoming Euro 6 regulation.

Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a Ford-sourced six-speed manual gearbox, while the Avanti will also be optionally available with a dual-clutch PowerShift transmission.

Although 240HP combined with a dry kerb weight of 1,562 kg (3,443 pounds) isn’t exactly supercar territory, the Avanti will be priced at a reasonable Rs 30 lakh, or around US$56,000 at the current exchange rates.

Later on, it may also be offered with a turbocharged Honda V6, which with an output of around 400HP should seriously improve performance (and, presumably, increase the price accordingly).

2012 Design and Concept Chevrolet Camaro GT3 by Sareni United

The Chevrolet Camaro is a relative newbie in the world of GT3 racing, but ever since the fifth-generation model was revealed a few years ago, a lot of racing teams have gone to battle with the American muscle car.

With the new year still on the horizon, a lot of teams have begun their preparations leading up to the 2012 season. One in particular, German-based YACO Racing, is hard-at-work preparing their version of the Camaro GT3 race cars that were built by Sareni United.

With the Sareni-built Camaro GT3, YACO Racing is preparing their race cars to compete in a number of GT3 race series in the coming year, including that of the German ADAC GT Master series and GT3 European Championship. Since the car is being prepped for racing, the overall set-up has been completely modified for the occasion. One look at the Camaro and you’ll notice a number of changes being made, including the use of a new front bumper design, an enormous rear spoiler, and a refurbished interior, complete with all the necessary elements - race seats, roll cage, etc. - for a GT3 race car.

Another thing about this particular Camaro GT3 race car is the involvement of SaReni United, which is owned by Reiter Engineering and who introduced their own version of a Camaro GT3 racer about a year ago that YACO Racing will be using for the 2012 season.

Performance details on the Sareni Camaro GT3 center around a 7.9-liter Katech V8 engine rated at up to 650 horsepower and 627 lb/ft of torque with lap times similar to the Gallardo LP600+ GT3, which incidentally, is another one of Reiter Engineering’s creations. This engine is mated to a newly designed HOLINGER gear box with paddle shifters located on the steering wheel.

Price: Rs 2.65 crore (Rs 26.5 million)

A drop-top version of the 8C Competizione coupe, the Spider, was seen at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California in 2005.

The car shares its name with the Alfa Romeo 8C 2009 from 1934, which dominated the 1000 Miglia race in 1935-1938 and 1947.

The two-seat 8C coupe made its debut as a concept car, at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2003.

The 8C Spider, like its coupe sibling, is planned to be built in a limited number of 500 cars.

The engine powering both coupe and convertible is from Maserati's Quattroporte, although it's been enlarged to 4.7 litres of displacement.

It makes 450 horsepower at 7,000 rpm, and 347 lb-ft of torque at 4,750 rpm, with a 7,500 rpm redline.
